How can increase attractiveness, liveability, and accessibility of Şişhane Square with an interdisciplinary design approach?
We organized three-days co-design workshop within the event series of the “Designing Our Livable Cities Together” host by Consulate General of the Netherlands in İstanbul. We came together 30 creative professionals such as architects, sound designers, makers, illustrators and more to discuss livability and accessibility of public spaces. We picked a location, Şişhane Square in İstanbul and the main goal was co-designing and building an intervention on the square based on two days learnings, brainstorming and discussions. We also invited 3 architects from The Netherlands to create a space for sharing learnings, methods and stories between creative people also we hosted 2 architecture company which designed two different parts of the square; ŞanalArch and Tabanlıoğlu Architecture. We listened to their design journey, potential and obstacles of the location.
After two days of discovery, discussions and sketches we shared a limited materials and equipment list with the participants. We collected plastic box wastes from all over the Beyoğlu district to create awareness about waste and capacity of materials. At the end of the second day, participants came up with a mutual intervention design. Last day of the workshop we all came together to build the pavilion and got down to work. At the end of the day, with the sunset, we finalized the details and celebrated what we did but mostly how we created new connections with the city, disciplines and each other.
