#designforchange

How can we design a safe bike lane, which focuses on the needs of the users between Karaköy and Kabatas with the participants of
different stakeholders?

This is a co-design workshop but not one of the ordinary ones! We designed a 2 days workshop with a very fun start. We came together with all participants, organizers, partners, and also the mayor of Beyoğlu Municipality and Consul General of The Netherlands Istanbul to experience the selected location by cycling.

What

We organized a two-days co-design workshop in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Istanbul. We came together with 20 professionals from different backgrounds such as municipality employees, creative professionals, academicians, and bike lane design experts from the Netherlands to design a safe bike lane between two districts in Istanbul.

We started our workshop with a cycling tour between those selected locations with the participant of Consul General Bart van Bolhuis and the mayor of Beyoglu municipality. After experiencing cycling on the selected route we came together to discuss possibilities and obstacles of location.

Process &Result

One of the main goals was introducing the collaborative design approach to the district municipalities in Istanbul.

Designing bike lanes is one of the strongest expertise of The Netherlands. We brought almost 35 professionals from different backgrounds. There were city planners, public space designers, design students, and even some shop owners from the selected location. Those professionals got a chance to learn dutch design methodologies from first hand.

Four diverse groups created different projects which focus on different aspects of the topic such as habit change, systemic integration of cycling by positive encouragement, parking design, and even a communication campaign.

We really surprised how diverse and different projects came to life for such a limited location.
